Technical Requirements
Client-side requirements
JavaScript is extensively used by Live™, therefore users have to make sure that JavaScript is enabled in their browser. The Live™ client-side code does not depend on ActiveX controls, but they do depend on the built-in support for AJAX technology in browsers. To be able to use this technology in Internet Explorer up to version 6, ActiveX needs to be enabled. This is by default the case, but ActiveX may have been disabled by the user in some Internet Explorer browsers.
Enabling cookies is highly recommended, since this is used for optimization purposes in the communication between the Live™ client and server.
HTTP infrastructure requirements
To protect users from malicious Internet web sites, browsers employ a rigid security mechanism regarding which actions may be performed by JavaScript code. One rule of this mechanism states that JavaScript code can only make autonomous connections to the exact server the JavaScript was received from. For this reason, both the HTTP gateway to the Live-DataEngine™ and the web application must be accessible through the same domain name.
The way to achieve this is to set up a transparent proxy in your web server. Transparent proxying is a very common technique to combine multiple sites into a single domain name.
It is highly recommended to have all communication take place over encrypted channels. This can be achieved by setting the transparent proxy server to use HTTPS, the secure socket layer version of the HTTP protocol, or use an SSL.
The following browsers are supported by Live™:
Deployment environment requirements
The various backend components of Live™ all require a Java™ Java Runtime Environment version 1.5 or higher. Availability of at least 512M of physical memory is required for each component, though heavy concurrent usage may necessitate more memory.
The following operating systems are supported:
The Live™ components need to communicate with each other at times. In order to achieve this, the IPv4 network protocol must be available on the system. Communication over IPv6 is not supported.
